Musicians needed - Please!

At the expense of sounding like Ah-nold in one of those “Terminator” movies, I’m sounding the alarm. The machines are taking over!!

This is news?! They’ve been taking over on the music scene since before the Moog synthesizer. Yes, but even with the Moog you had to have skills to play it! (plus muscles to move it, the thing weighed 1/2 a ton!).

I guess my concern is that in man’s transition from rock to hollowed-out log to acoustic stringed to electric, the skills required to create a sound that was pleasing to the human ear remained intact. Now, with the new technologies, it’s “set it and forget it, no user-accesible parts here!”

Now does that mean that there is no interest in music among our children? Far from it. In fact, one of the most popular games available is a simulation of a rock guitar musician. For some expert insight into this game, I interview my 16-year-old:

“So, you pretend to be this musician and you try to play what he is playing?” ” Well, no the “guitar” doesn’t have any strings, it has colored buttons.”

“Okay, so the buttons make sounds and you have to match your sound to what he is playing?” “No, the “guitar” doesn’t make a sound at all, you have to match the colors on the screen to the color-coded buttons on the “guitar”.”

“Want to go see a Blues concert? It features people playing real guitars that make a sound.” “No, that’s boring.”

“What are you going to do tonight dad?” “I think I’m going to slash my color-coded wrists!”

Revoltingly,

One Response to “Musicians needed - Please!”

  1. This sounds right serious Mr. Spurlock. A week ago, I had the pleasure of chaufering two teens. They asked me to turn on the radio. I asked, already knowing, what station they wanted to hear…” K9..”
They proved me right> I asked them if they ever hear Jazz or Blues. They thought the question was hilarious. Well there is a time and a place for everything. I told them the next time we were in the van together, we were going to listen to a station of my choosing. Perhaps dissecting a remix might help these very young adults, hear were much of their music originates.
