B.P.R.D. for week of 5/17

This week’s show is one piece: Glenn Gould’s audio documentary “The Idea of North,” collected on Glenn Gould: The Radio Artist. It’s one of a series he created for the CBC and one of three focusing on the theme of extreme isolation. More info about the doc, including what I assume is the hilarious CBC promo image (there was apparently also a film). Check this marvelous clip of Gould explaining the art of composing for multiple spoken voices. It notes a particular debt to the “undulating dives and swerves” of Webern before switching to neat footage of Gould performing some Webern variations.

B.P.R.D. – 05/11/2009

Two rare 1962 Harry Partch LPs on his Gate 5 Records label managed to find their way (temporarily, sadly) into my hands, and make up this week’s show.

The Wayward has three famous “speech music” pieces, played in order of appearance: “U.S. Highball,” “The Letter” and “Ulysses at the Edge.”

Plectra & Percussion Dances also has three pieces, but we only had time for “Castor & Pollux – A Dance for the Twin Rhythms of Gemini” and “Ring Around The Moon.” Both LPs include selections excerpted from longer works, which can be found in more complete versions on these two reissue CDs on New World. There’s tons of stuff about Partch online, of course, including this neat site exploring the instruments he created – it even lets you try your virtual hand at them.
