B.P.R.D. – 09/13/2009

This week’s B.P.R.D. starts with a couple of early, somewhat more experimental pieces from Aaron Copland: 1) a slightly jazzy Dance from Music for the Theater from 1925, part of that era’s then-daring infatuation with the surface of early jazz (the liner notes point out that “the more conservative critics, hide-bound by excessive dosages of German romanticism, were hostile”), and 2) the sharply angular Piano Variations of 1930. Francis Poulenc’s 1932 Sextet for Wind Quintet and Piano follows. Next is William Grant Still‘s Three Visions for Piano from 1936, from the wonderful CD Black Diamonds: Althea Waites plays Music by African-American Composers. The show ends with Aaron Jay Kernis’ Meditation (In Memory of John Lennon) for cello and piano, which Kernis says “utilizes techniques borrowed from Minimalism to stretch the tonal harmonies and melodic shapes of Lennon’s beautiful song Imagine.” Enjoy.

FreeWorldNetworkRadio-X – 09/10/2009

Its such an exciting thing to allow one’s experience from travel and listening to others talk about music inspire another ones performance. This show is an example of just that, after I returned from the Hot & Spicy Food Festival in Toronto. Please excuse the “stop and start” followed by “dead-air” leading into “Endicott”…. Arrggghhh!!
