Radio Geronimo was the first European free-form station, some 40 years ago. One of Geronimo’s prime movers and most popular program hosts was London-based Barry Everitt, host of taintradio’s weekly House of Mercy program. Radio Geronimo provided many colorful moments in the saga of pirate radio, beginning with the fact that its transmitter was built in Monte Carlo in 1940 for use as part of Hitler’s propaganda apparatus.
On February 15, 1970 Radio Geronimo began weekly broadcasts from Radio Monte Carlo. Presenters Hugh Nolan & Barry Everitt played the now historic version of “Amazing Grace” by The Great Awakening and Radio Geronimo was born. The signal was heard over the entire continent and even though it was a legal transmission it was referred to as a pirate by many countries, including the UK. Its free-form programming and use of very free speech seemed to upset the British Government and the BBC jammed the signal. Radio Geronimo hit back by jamming the BBC headquarters in London (with strawberry jam). Hugh & Barry were arrested and made the front page of the daily papers, thus creating a massive new audience for Geronimo.
The success of the station also riled other broadcasters, and as often happens , other companies bought their way into Monte Carlo; by November 1970 Geronimo was off the air and in the realm of legend.
Barry’s Geronimo sidekick Hugh Nolan is departed, as are Radio Geronimo backers Jimmy Miller and Tony Secuna.
Barry Everitt ’s London-based House of Mercy Productions and listener-supported
taintradio.org presents a two-hour special program celebrating Radio Geronimo’s 40th anniversary from 1:00-3:00pm (Eastern) on Monday, February 15th, exactly 40 years after its initial broadcast. The program will repeat as follows (all times are Eastern):
Wednesday, February 17th - 7:00-9:00pm
Sunday, February 21 - 3:00-5:00pm
Thursday, February 25 - 2:00-4:00am

The first hour of this week’s show is all Johnny Otis-related, from his 40s big-band/bebop through his 50s R&B to his 60s and 70s soulfunkblues - including the hilariously, incredibly raunchy “Snatch and the Poontangs” album he released in 1969 (almost certainly with his teen son Shuggie on guitar). I knew about Johnny Otis, sure, but hadn’t really explored his career until now. Motherfuckin WOW.

taintradio.org is bringing those purveyors of melodramatic popular song, Hurray for the Riff-Raff to Raleigh for a show at Marsh Woodwinds on Sat Feb 27th at 8pm. This trio hails from New Orleans and their music is a blend of blues, thrash and string-band music.
Instrumentation includes banjo, bass, accordion, guitar and autoharp. Daytrotter described them as follows: ”Hurray For The Riff Raff makes an odd combination of darkened folk music that contains full-bodied crooning, fascinating elements of the macabre and the kind of Americana flourishes that show up in music by contemporaries such as Dark Dark Dark, The Handsome Family and North Carolina’s The Bowerbirds. They aren’t songs of gleefulness, but they can be.”

You can check out Hurray for the Riff-Raff at their websites:
http://www.hurrayfortheriffraff.com
http://www.myspace.com/hurrayfortheriffraff
They have several videos you can watch to get an idea of what they’re like.
The show will take place at Marsh Woodwinds in Raleigh, NC on Sat Feb 27 at 8pm. Tickets are $10 and will be available at the door.
For more info, email dave@taintradio.org or call (919)-834-8667.

Found a wonderful LP of modern compositions by Arthur Berger and Richard Donovan at the local used shop. It’s performed by a chamber group with Gunther Schuller conducting, sometime around 1966-67. I’ve interspersed the 4 pieces from that LP with selections from the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra’s excellent 1994 CD “A Set of Pieces: Music by Charles Ives.” Funny bit of synchronicity - pianist Gilbert Kalish appears on both recordings, which I didn’t realize until I was half-done recording this week’s show. The five Elizabethan lyrics, by the way, include great 17th-century lines like “If single love be such a curse, to marry is to make it ten times worse.” Hope you enjoy.

Episode 26
Congo Square was the only place in America where African slaves were allowed to market goods, socialize, and participate in drumming, music making, and dance in the 1700s-1800s, establishing the roots of American music. Although the historic use of the site predates jazz, it is significant because of the role the square played in New Orleans’ musical heritage and as a symbol of the early African-American contributions to the origins of jazz and other musical forms. Hi, I’m Jeff Duperon your host for a three hour journey of musical delights showcasing the music of New Orleans and the surrounding Region. Welcome…to Congo Square on listener-supported…taintradio.
