Analog and More - 05/15/2010

On May 9th Lena Horne died. Some my want to dispute her musical credentials, I for one know that she grew to become one of the best vocal musicians in modern music. Her light skin and magnificent beauty opened doors for her that were closed to other Blacks. It also closed more doors than it opened. She was a fighter whose talent was sharpened by anger. Like the other Great Colored Girls; Diahann Carroll, Leslie Uggams, Shirley Bassey, and Nina Simone their talent, intellect, and beauty could not shatter the walls of racism. Lena Horne’s body of music shows a steady growth in phrasing, ability to swing, and story telling. By the time she recorded the brilliant album Natures Baby she was a musical force not to be taken lightly. She has earn her spot at the table with Ella, Frank, Sarah, Billy, Torme’ and others. What makes her very special was something I can’t put my finger on but I know that there will probably never be anyone like her again.
