This week’s melange of worldwide smash hits. Eugene McDaniels is particularly worth reading about for the delicious story of Spiro Agnew calling Atlantic Records after Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse was released and telling them they’d better not release any more records by that guy. Who cares if it’s true; it’s a great fucking story. Enjoy.

Three pieces this week:
John Adams’ Fearful Symmetries (1988), with Adams conducting the Orchestra of St. Luke’s with synthesizer. Adams is quoted in the notes calling the work “confrontational” but it has humor as well, including “Liberace in Hell,” a section where the synth “becomes a campy silent-movie organ.” The notes also point out that early on, “the melodic line is suavely crooned by the ‘lounge lizard’ quartet of saxophones, English horn, and bassoon.” I love that.
Next is Jose Luis Greco’s boisterous I’m Superman! (1994), with its Carl Stalling-like frenzied shifts, performed by the Orquesta Filarmonica de Gran Canaria.
Finally, one of my favorite “new music” pieces, Ezra Laderman’s 1962 Nonette for six winds, violin, cello and piano, recorded by the New York Philomusica in 1996 for this 2-cd set (which has 5 more tracks than listed at that page). Hope you enjoy. The BPRD airs Sundays at 2pm, with repeats Tuesdays at 11am and Fridays at 7pm.

Episode 40
Congo Square was the only place in America where African slaves were allowed to market goods, socialize, and participate in drumming, music making, and dance in the 1700s-1800s, establishing the roots of American music. Although the historic use of the site predates jazz, it is significant because of the role the square played in New Orleans’ musical heritage and as a symbol of the early African-American contributions to the origins of jazz and other musical forms. Hi, I’m Jeff Duperon your host for a three hour journey of musical delights showcasing the music of New Orleans and the surrounding Region. Welcome…to Congo Square on listener-supported…taintradio.

taintradio.org is now in its third year of operation as a 24/7 venue for music and music-related programming. We launched taintradio in 2008 knowing our decision to become an all-volunteer, noncommercial, listener-supported basis was a journey into uncharted territory, to wit:
No ads on the site or in the stream - we’re not here to sell you anything;
No on-air fundraisers, corporate underwriters or grants - when we talk it’s about the music;
No format or music genre restrictions - taintradio is a venue for independent producers so each program producer is independent;
No music pirating - stealing from musicians and the people who make music possible really sucks.
Listener support is intended as our only source of income; it now provides about 35% of operating costs, for which we are very grateful.
Our music licensing fees to ASCAP, BMI, SESAC and Sound Exchange for the 1st half of 2011 are now due. So this is an excellent time for you to click the Tip Jar tab at the website and do what you can. All contributors will receive a pair of taintradio bumper stickers and contributors of $50 or more will also receive a taintradio t-shirt.
Thanks.
