B.P.R.D. – 08/19/2012

Music this week from a couple of recent classical CDs on the Sono Luminus label along with a couple of slightly older gems:

1) The ZOFO duet (pianists Eva-Maria Zimmermann and Keisuke Nakagoshi) from the 2012 CD Mind Meld: Works for One Piano, Four Hands – we heard the 2nd & 3rd movements of Harold Shapero’s 1941 Sonata for Piano Four Hands (originally performed by Shapero and his friend and fellow Harvard student Leonard Bernstein).

2) Glenn Gould playing the final fugue of Hindemith’s 1936 Piano Sonata No. 3, from a 1973 recording. Bonus: Gould talking about Hindemith’s fugue-writing skills in a TV appearance.

3) Stanislav Pronin doing a fantastic version of Alfred Schnittke’s 1982 A Paganini for solo violin, from his 2011 CD Violin For One.

4) Homage to Sarasate (1976) by Leonardo Balada, performed by the Louisville Orchestra as part of the amazing series of LPs the orchestra released from the 1950s through the 1980s, commissioning new works and recording living composers. Most folks don’t know Louisville was a center for contemporary classical – so much so that when Shostakovich toured the US in 1959 Louisville was one of the handful of stops he made.

5) The Jasper String Quartet performing the 3rd & 4th movements of Aaron Jay Kernis’ 1990 String Quartet No. 1, from the 2012 CD The Kernis Project: Schubert.

6. Back to the ZOFO Duet for a four-hands, one-piano version of Debussy’s Six Épigraphes Antiques, which I had no idea was originally composed to accompany a lesbian erotic poetry recitation, the cleverly forged Songs of Bilitis by Debussy’s friend Pierre Louÿs.

That’s it for this week. Hope you enjoy.

We have two much requested archive sessions this week, the first coming
from Tandy leader Mike Ferrio who was touring with Ana Egge almost a
year ago when they dropped in for a session. They both played tracks from their
current records, Mike’s ‘ Good Luck Mountain ‘ and Ana’s ‘ Bad Blood ‘.
The second session comes from the New Orleans singer Meschiya Lake and
The Little Big Horns. Recorded in February during their first tour of the UK
supporting her album, ‘ Lucky Devil ‘, she brought our first sousaphone in the studio, we
had to solve a slight height problem and the sound we got was fantastic.
Record of the week comes from Wailin’ Jenny’s founder’s third solo album
‘ Darlingford ‘ by Juno award winning Cara Luft. This stunning album establishes
her as one of Canada’s leading writer performers.
