UPDOC 210: GLOOMIN’ WITH GUS
There is (not) a remarkable snapshot of Gustav Mahler taken by his wife Alma at the moment he figured out that he might be able to give unwary members of the audience actual heart attacks with the thunderous last chord of his 6th Symphony; so it’s up to me to warn listeners of this week’s Updoc—Friday at 8PM, next Tuesday at noon, Woody Allen time—to steel themselves when it gets real quiet about half an hour into the last movement. The main point of the show, however, is the BBC Legends recording of Jascha Horenstein’s 1969 concert with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Until I heard it recently, the only Horenstein 6th I knew was the baggy, logy, sluggish concert performance from Stockholm. The Bournemouth version presents the same basic interpretation, but it’s played by an orchestra that understood what Horenstein—arguably the greatest of all Mahler conductors on record; and I so argue—was after and could play it. If you want to figure out why this Mahler 6th is different from all other Mahler 6ths, tune in: I rattle on at nerdish length about it, and play short contrasting samples from Abbado and Bernstein. The scary thing for me personally is how much I start to sound like Phil Schaap. There’s also some Handel and Buxtehude on the show, and even a tail-end of jazz. Stop by, bring a snack, something to drink, and maybe your own defibrillator.

Our first session originates in LA & arrived at our door via the Paisley Underground… The Long Ryders and now Britain’s longest running hot bluegrass band… Sid Griffin is with us along with the mighty Coal Porters. The new album ‘ Find The One ‘ is featured in this hotter than hot session.
The second session comes from a vocally blessed Canadian songstress from the province of Prince Edward Island… Catherine MacLellan is here along with her guitarist Chris Gautier… they play songs from her latest album ‘ Silhouette ‘ plus a couple of new unrecorded writings.
Record of the week eased itself into the show as legends should… Kris Kristofferson’s latest work produced by Don Was… entitled ‘ Feeling Mortal ‘ is another great collection of songs and is the cream of the cream.
