We may not have achieved empirical springtime yet, but we are experiencing Passover and Easter, according to our inclinations, so some of the musical picks on this week’s Updoc—Friday at 8PM, noon next Tuesday, New York Cosmopolitan time—were easy: the opening choruses of Bach’s St. John and Matthew Passions, Paul Robeson singing Go Down, Moses, etc., but it wasn’t much of a stretch to come up with Eric Satie’s uncharacteristically searing Messe des Pauvres and a couple of Arnold Schoenberg’s powerful postwar works composed after his reconversion to Judaism: his kabbalistic setting of Kol Nidre—yes I know it’s a Yom Kippur piece, but so what—and his shattering A Survivor from Warsaw. Things lighten up after that with a popular Bach Cantata, the end of the B-Minor Mass, and a couple of other versions of Go Down, Moses, one of the most indelible American melodies. Great Hank Jones solo on it too. Familiars of the show may also enjoy a number of oopsradio.argh moments in which your commentator botches a detail or two. Bring your own liquid paper, and either leavened and unleavened bread to munch on, or possibly for the tip jar.

On the 51st edition of RootsWorld Radio we’ll wander the planet looking for traditions less heard and hear what happens when they are dragged into the 21st century. From the little village of Warsaw to the streets of Sao Paulo, from Copenhagen to Thessaloniki, we’ll hear how everything old is new in the hands of some of the world’s most creative musicians and composers. Artists will include Kristi Stassinopoulou & Stathis Kalyvioti, The Warsaw Village Band, Bulgarian Voices Angelite, Mircan, Red Baraat, Riccardo Tesi, Kobo Town, Claudio Kron, Fjarin, Dino Saluzzi; Anja Lechner; Felix Saluzzi, Barana, Svbosk Quartet, Rannock, and Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba. Wednesdays 5pm (eastern), Saturdays 8am.
Thanks all.
