House of Mercy – 04/27/2013

This radio show is dedicated to our studio pussy cat Rocco who sadly went to greet those arriving at the ‘ pearly gates ‘ rather than the Snake Pit studio. He welcomed all the visiting musicians and whilst chatting he would test out their petting skills and the warmth of their laps.
We also learned of the sudden and far to early death of roots musician Bob Brozman. His controversial take on freedom was highly regarded here and his wide vision of all things roots was an inspiration to many. We recorded a HoM radio session back in 2009 and this is our first session this week.
Our second session comes from the heavily gonged and foremost blues vocalist in Britain Ian Siegal who when gets behind a guitar is no slouch either. Ian is starting a long solo tour of the UK and in the middle is bringing his Missippippi Mudbloods band of Luther & Cody Dickinson into the equation and a HoM radio session.
Record of the week comes from an overlooked Australian…Waz E James hails from Melbourne but commutes to Brenham Texas to record. ‘ Noisy Trucks ‘ is a great country rock album with a down under twist… his scorched vocals are washed down with a whiskey on a mission and his writing cuts a deep groove to your soul.

Rafi Zabor’s Updoc, Fri. 26 & Tues. 4/30

I’ve played a lot of Lester Young on the show—that would be Updoc on taintradio.org, Friday at 8PM and noon next Tuesday, NY Uptown time—but have been inexplicably remiss re Nat King Cole, who was, moreover, a friend of my father’s; so it’s make-up time this week, with selections from their 1946 Verve recording in a trio with Buddy Rich and a few cuts from Cole with his trio and on his own. The man had such impeccable style and class. Also onboard: a new CD from Robert Hurst featuring Branford and Tain and Glasper and Maupin and more, and a recent one from pianist Donald Brown featuring Ravi Coltrane. Also Jennifer Higdon’s rip-roaring tour de force of a Concerto for Orchestra, a lithe little Piano Trio from Judith Weir and, most exquisite of all, a setting for voice and orchestra by Henri Dutilleux of a letter from Vincent Van Gogh to his brother Theo.
