Death Valley Radio Program 869

Death Valley Radio is a format-free program for the musically curious.

In this age of bland radio programming (both commercial and non-) and automated music services, DVR is still built by hand, non-algorithmically — one set at a time.

Death Valley Radio can be heard here at taintradio on Saturdays at 10:00 PM ET and Wednesdays at 10:00 AM ET.

DVR program 869 features lots of mallet percussion (John Lurie, Psapp, Shugo Tokumaru, Vampire Weekend, the Philip Glass Ensemble, Patrick Castillo); contemporary compositions inspired by traditional hymns (Van Dyke Parks, David Rosenboom, Ulysses Owens Jr.); songs of hope (Eric Bibb with Leyla McCalla, Luther Dickinson & the Sons of Mudboy, Will Oldham); and Afrocentric brass (Chucho Valdés & the Afro-Cuban Messengers, Toumani Diabaté’s Symmetric Orchestra, Oumou Sangaré, Angélique Kidjo, Cody ChesnuTT).

Also: “Xmas Gift,” a 1972 poem in which Allen Ginsberg, high on mescaline, meets Albert Einstein more than once without mentioning the atom bomb.

Each week’s playlist will be archived until the end of time at deathvalleyradio.org.
