Death Valley Radio Program 891

Death Valley Radio is a format-free program for the musically curious.

In this age of bland radio programming (both commercial and non-) and automated music services, DVR is still built by hand, non-algorithmically — one set at a time.

Death Valley Radio can be heard here at taintradio on Saturdays at 10:00 PM ET and Wednesdays at 10:00 AM ET.

DVR program 891 features Mark Lanegan’s rendition of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s “The Ballad of Mack the Knife”; sun songs (John Doe, Luther Dickinson, Ronnie Spector, the Walker Brothers); sweet soul music (Etta James, Peggy Scott & Jo Jo Benson, Delaney & Bonnie and Friends, James Carr, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin); Tony Joe White’s story of Polk Salad Annie and her mama, “a wretched, spiteful, straight-razor totin’ woman”; bassist Eleonore Oppenheim’s new recording of “La Isla Mágica,” written by Puerto Rican multi-instrumentalist Angélica Negrón; and new music from Instruments of Happiness, David Torn, 9Bach, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Ash Koosha, Rudresh Mahanthappa and Henning Sieverts.

Each week’s playlist will be archived until the end of time at deathvalleyradio.org.
