Death Valley Radio Program 892

Death Valley Radio is a format-free program for the musically curious.

In this age of bland radio programming (both commercial and non-) and automated music services, DVR is still built by hand, non-algorithmically — one set at a time.

Death Valley Radio can be heard here at taintradio on Saturdays at 10:00 PM ET and Wednesdays at 10:00 AM ET.

DVR program 892 salutes the Carter Family (Mother Maybelle Carter, Ralph Stanley, Emmylou Harris, Matt Wilson’s Happy Family) and features train songs in a country vein (John Doe, Paul Reddick, Pam Tillis, Dwight Yoakam, Tate Moore); death letters (Son Volt, Neil Young, Beck, Cassandra Wilson); T. Rex and Western Saharan rock (Kel Assouf, Bombino, Tinariwen, Nayim Alal with Ali Mohamed); the Ragazze Quartet and Kapok’s new interpretation of “Sunrise of the Planetary Dream Collector,” a piece written by Terry Riley for Kronos Quartet in 1980; Mostly Other People Do the Killing’s spirited cover of Billy Joel’s “Allentown”; and some astute political analysis, courtesy of Dr. John: “Whenever anything goes wrong, we’ve got someone to blame — Them!
