Our first session comes from a band making their first tour of the UK & Europe… from Nashville Tennessee we have The Wood Brothers. They have been making a name for themselves in the US for four roots albums ‘ Smoke Ring Halo ‘ being the latest. The next is being produced by the legendary Buddy Miller… a great debut session with wonderful harmonies.
After a number of requests this Fresno California bluegrass roots band session has been dusted off from the archives and is being sent out to set your feet a tapping. The Old Tire Swingers play hot Appalachian good time bluegrass with the passion it deserves. In fact roll back the carpets and find yerself a dance partner.
Record of the week is the first release since the stunningly good live double album of 2011 from Slaid Cleaves. ‘ Still Fighting The War ‘ is an esquisite collecting of wonderfully fine songs written by a man at the top of his game. A five year wait for a new studio album shows the care and attention Slaid puts into his music.

We have two English acts in session this week… the first from Oxford are The Dreaming Spires who are the brothers Robin & Joe Bennett. Their musical history takes in the ground breaking band Goldrush…they produced and played in Danny & The Champions Of The World and now their debut album as The Dreaming Spires ‘ Brothers In Brooklyn’. A very classy harmonious session indeed.
The second session is a new young roots/blues musician who is honing his talents on the road. Matt Woosey’s debut album ‘ On The Wagon ‘ is featured here in a live setting.
Record of the week comes from a legend in the world of blues harmonica… in his 69 years as a professional musician James Cotton has played with Sonny Boy Williamson, Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters before very successfully starting his own all star band. ‘ Cotton Mouth Man ‘ looks back on his career through songs written by James and a host of guest musicians who are all at the top of their game. Buddy Guy producer & drummer Tom Hambridge holds this album all together in both of his guesses. James sings one very personnel song and Ruthie Foster, Greg Allman, Warren Hayes, Delbert McClinton, Keb Mo and the current singer with The James Cotton Band Darrell Nulisch take on the rest of the vocals. Guest guitarists include Joe Bonamassa, Rob McNelly, Colin Linden & Tommy MacDonald and Chuck Leavell on Piano & B3. Cotton Mouth Man is surely the blues albumof this year…..we play nine songs from this master work.

This radio show is dedicated to our studio pussy cat Rocco who sadly went to greet those arriving at the ‘ pearly gates ‘ rather than the Snake Pit studio. He welcomed all the visiting musicians and whilst chatting he would test out their petting skills and the warmth of their laps.
We also learned of the sudden and far to early death of roots musician Bob Brozman. His controversial take on freedom was highly regarded here and his wide vision of all things roots was an inspiration to many. We recorded a HoM radio session back in 2009 and this is our first session this week.
Our second session comes from the heavily gonged and foremost blues vocalist in Britain Ian Siegal who when gets behind a guitar is no slouch either. Ian is starting a long solo tour of the UK and in the middle is bringing his Missippippi Mudbloods band of Luther & Cody Dickinson into the equation and a HoM radio session.
Record of the week comes from an overlooked Australian…Waz E James hails from Melbourne but commutes to Brenham Texas to record. ‘ Noisy Trucks ‘ is a great country rock album with a down under twist… his scorched vocals are washed down with a whiskey on a mission and his writing cuts a deep groove to your soul.

Record of the week has the feel of your best friend moving back to town… this long loving hug comes from UK’s number one Americana Country band The Rockingbirds. Alan Tylers writing is as strong as ever… the playing shines and ‘ The Return Of The Rockingbirds ‘ will surely give them the success to keep them playing for us for many more years to come and a big tip of the hat to Tom at Loose Records for making this happen…watch out for the tour dates.
Our first session this week comes from The Motor City…the heart land of American rock…mixed with the love of blues…P-A-U-L Lamb & The Detroit Breakdown are an old school trio who take no prisoners. They first came to my attention on my blues stage at Glastonbury in 2010…since then they have been here opening for Molly Hatchet and causing ‘ jungle hot ‘ shows around the country.
The second session has a familier ring to the story…UK band takes American music back to the USA with an English twist…better known in the US than here the Leeds based band The Dunwells take Everly Brothers harmonies and strong writing and make it there very own.
