Two sessions this week, both from current touring artists,
recorded a few days ago. First up is Canadian & Wailin’ Jenny’s
member Ruth Moody and her band, she plays tracks from her 1st
solo album ‘The Garden’. On the third hour we have the sensational Brooklyn
honky tonk, roots band, The Sweetback Sisters, they play tracks from
their latest release ‘ Looking For A Fight ‘.

This week in session we were promised the Wagon Tales with hot
banjo picker Leon Hunt, we we ended up with half the Wagon Tales
that make up Leon’s band…….confusion was soon sorted out with
some top notch bluegrass played by this quartet.
An extra feature this week is the visit of Maverick Magazine’s editor
Alan Cackett, he talks about the re-launch of Maverick in the
printed format, plays some of the featured artists in the new issue and
generally joins in the festive mood in the snake pit studio.
Our record of the week comes from a brand new East London duo, Black & Scarr,
their debut album is destined to become a classic, sounds like a Nashville roots
album with colorful East London lyrics with a sprinkle of coal dust from Johonny
Blacks home country of England’s North East. The coming together of Emma Scarr
& Johnny results in ‘ North & South ‘ our record of the week.

This week is session we have a member of the East Nashville musical fraternity, a guitar for hire sideman to many but now with his second solo album a writer in his own right. Jon Byrd’s 1st album ‘ Byrd’s Auto Parts ‘ was a loved by all who heard it, his second and latest album ‘ Down At The Well Of Wishes ‘ on Longleaf Pine Records, has fired up international interest and is now highly acclaimed by all. We caught Jon at the tail end of his tour on Thanksgiving Day and he plays songs from both his records.
Our record of the week comes from a musical friend of the HoM, Brigitte DeMeyer’s first solo record ‘ Red River Flower ‘ was a long term visitor to the radio show and with the release of her new record ‘ Rose Of Jericho ‘ ( self release ), we find another inspiring collection of songs and as with her first, Al Perkins supplies the highest of quality peddle steel and dobro, the major difference between the two records is that Brigitte now shares the producing credits with 1st album producer Brady Blade.

‘ Carry Me To Home ‘ and they perform in the Snake Pit as they set out on a five week
tour of Europe with Cahalen Morrison & Eli West.
Our record of the week comes from Richmond, Virginia where The Hot Seats have been
whipping up a storm for a few years, I saw them as Special Ed and the Shortbus who played
The Maverick festival three years ago, they have mixed all the Shortbus ragtime with
bluegrass and this album ‘LIVE’ pretty much sums up where they are at…..HOT!!!
Recorded at the Ashland Coffee & Tea House in April this year.
I played a Bill Morrissey track last week and you wrote to tell me he had passed away back in July,
this I didn’t know. I was having my own medical problems then as well, so this week I have
included a short set of Bill’s music into the last hour. RIP Bill Morrissey your music lives on.

In session this week the cream of the current crop of young bluegrass bands
from The Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia we have Old Sledge, led by fiddle
player supreme Mr. Chance MacCoy. Recorded in October during there UK
tour, this is a hot session of there own songs and a selection of classics, a
bluegrass treat.
The record of the week was a tough choice, having been away for a while
the selection had built up, but, as is our practice, we are always on the hunt for new
talent, we discovered some older talent but new as well. Bradley Kopp & Lorrie
Singer are a well established married couple from Buda Texas, Lorrie sings with
show bands and Bradley is a Texas Guitar Gun for hire. Behind all this they have
been writing and honing their own songs to create this album. Their good friend
Ian Mathews comfortably slipped into the producing seat and our record of the
week ‘ A Deep Oasis ‘ was born.

he new album ‘ Black Mountain UFO ‘ released this month on Hatman Records
Our Record of the week is the new Richmond Fontaine offering, ‘ The High Country’,
on Decor Records, it’s a bleak dark story of the tough and brutal life working in a logging
community high up in an Oregon outpost.
