Hello Fellow Tainters!
I hope everyone’s 2009 is getting off to a somewhat respectful start, despite all of the negativity around us. A couple of weeks ago, I was listening to Public Radio where they were having a discussion about Six-Word Memoirs, particularly as it related to the subject of love (Valentine’s Day was just around the corner). The concept of the Six-Word Memoir is an old one, begun by Ernest Hemingway, who, when asked to write a full story in six words, responded: “For Sale: baby shoes, never worn.” The link to the NPR story is here:
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=100510986
Listening to this story got me to thinking: What would some of our taintradio announcers submit as their own Memoir? (notice that I did not add the six-word requirement as that would be very un-taint-like to have such a structured format!). After all, these are some of the most creative people I know, it would be interesting to hear their voices on such an interesting writing project.
So, I sent an e-mail out to our announcers and, as I expected, they came through with flying colors! Here, in no particular order, are our submissions for your perusal. Feel free to add your own by commenting on this blog or by contacting your favorite announcer directly.
Enjoy our Six-Word (more, or less) memoirs!
Dave Tilley - “Old microphones, vacuum tubes, quartet wailing…”
Barry Everitt - “NO!!! I can beat the compression!”
“Fuck, whats a watershed?”
“tag team radio rules ok?”
Bob Rogers - “Hey y’all, listen to this!”
Rafi Zabor - “Visse, scrisse, amo. Lived, wrote, loved.”
J. Michael Harrison - “Life is short, make something happen!”
“Sitting at the feet of my Lord!”
“Here to see yet another day!”
“Do fries go with that shake?”
“Get the fuck out of here!”
“Play that funky music white boy!” (to be used where appropriate)!
Ken Field -” I did it my friggin way!”
“Kept an eye out for opportunities.”
“Education in science; career in music.”
Pearl Shelby Sharpe - “My drug of choice Robert Bonner.”
Brian Cullman -”Hey, what’s this red button for?”
“You think this will work? Maybe?”
“License? You need a license to…”.
Mitchell Feldman - “Please pass the salt. Thank you.”
Todd Morman - “Start, stop, turn around, swing, repeat”
“What the hell am I doing?”
Kevin Spurlock - “Destined for greatness - Work in progress”
“Headed to Weight Watchers - McDonalds obstructed!”
“”Radio or Me!” - I chose radio!”

NOKIA’S FIRST DESKTOP NET RADIO PLAYER BRINGS FRESH LOOK TO OLD DESIGN
Nokia’s Home Music Wi-Fi desktop Internet radio player is the
company’s first such device. Featuring a design similar to other desktop players, with a small display off-set by a single speaker, the Home Music player has a sleek and smooth look — quite different from those wood-paneled models. In addition to streaming Internet radio and accessing podcasts, the device can play stored music via a home network. And with SPDIF and RCA outputs, you can connect the device to a home stereo or home theater set-up. Read more at Engadget here.

Odetta, Voice of Civil Rights Movement, Dies at 77
Odetta, the singer whose deep voice wove together the strongest songs of American folk music and the civil rights movement, died on Tuesday at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. She was 77.
The cause was heart disease, said her manager, Doug Yeager. He added that she had been hoping to sing at Barack Obama’s inauguration.
Odetta sang at coffeehouses and at Carnegie Hall, made highly influential recordings of blues and ballads, and became one of the most widely known folk-music artists of the 1950s and ’60s. She was a formative influence on dozens of artists, including Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Janis Joplin.
Her voice was an accompaniment to the black-and-white images of the freedom marchers who walked the roads of Alabama and Mississippi and the boulevards of Washington in the quest to end racial discrimination.
Rosa Parks, the woman who started the boycott of segregated buses in Montgomery, Ala., was once asked which songs meant the most to her. She replied, “All of the songs Odetta sings.”
