We start with an early-80s Steve Reich piece for flutist Ransom Wilson (Reich had originally turned Wilson down, saying he couldn’t adapt his style for a solo instrument), then hear Hindemith’s 1958 Octet and close with a spare, fascinating string quartet by modern composer David Epstein. Interspersed are short pieces from a 2-CD collection of the complete chamber works of the often-overlooked French composer Jacques Ibert, mostly so I can have time to switch records around without making you wait through silence. Hope you enjoy.

The first hour of this week’s show is all Johnny Otis-related, from his 40s big-band/bebop through his 50s R&B to his 60s and 70s soulfunkblues - including the hilariously, incredibly raunchy “Snatch and the Poontangs” album he released in 1969 (almost certainly with his teen son Shuggie on guitar). I knew about Johnny Otis, sure, but hadn’t really explored his career until now. Motherfuckin WOW.

Found a wonderful LP of modern compositions by Arthur Berger and Richard Donovan at the local used shop. It’s performed by a chamber group with Gunther Schuller conducting, sometime around 1966-67. I’ve interspersed the 4 pieces from that LP with selections from the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra’s excellent 1994 CD “A Set of Pieces: Music by Charles Ives.” Funny bit of synchronicity - pianist Gilbert Kalish appears on both recordings, which I didn’t realize until I was half-done recording this week’s show. The five Elizabethan lyrics, by the way, include great 17th-century lines like “If single love be such a curse, to marry is to make it ten times worse.” Hope you enjoy.
