Big Lothar & the Hand People fan right now. Fair warning. Love that McKinley Jackson & the Politicans record, too - they were a great underrated house band for the Invictus/Hot Wax labels in the early 70s - and Can’t Help Lovin’ That Man, a strange comp of 1920s/30s men-singing-to-men and other gender-bending songs. Enjoy.

Oh, and I forgot to include the brilliant cover of “When Will I Be Loved” featuring Sandy Denny and Linda Peters (later Thompson) from “Rock On,” the great 1972 covers collection by a bunch of Britfolk stars simply calling themselves The Bunch.

Another week, another fidgety collection. You want my opinion, the Xenakis, Electric Eels, Harold Alexander, Ada Moore and Virgin Prunes can easily withstand a lot more attention if you’re so inclined.

The Cymande, late 70s Van, Andrew Hill, Atomic Rooster and early UB40 are particularly rocking my worldview these days. A gorgeous 13 minutes of spare, groovy Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan ends the set, with a great unknown Floaters cut as the palate cleanser. Hope you enjoy.

Faves from this week are Sarah Pillow’s modern remixes of 17-century vocal tunes, the Bela Fleck Throw Down Your Heart African acoustic collection and the 1974 LP from Jobriath, the world’s first openly gay rock star (well, attempted rock star, anyway).

This week’s melange of worldwide smash hits. Eugene McDaniels is particularly worth reading about for the delicious story of Spiro Agnew calling Atlantic Records after Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse was released and telling them they’d better not release any more records by that guy. Who cares if it’s true; it’s a great fucking story. Enjoy.

Three pieces this week:

John Adams’ Fearful Symmetries (1988), with Adams conducting the Orchestra of St. Luke’s with synthesizer. Adams is quoted in the notes calling the work “confrontational” but it has humor as well, including “Liberace in Hell,” a section where the synth “becomes a campy silent-movie organ.” The notes also point out that early on, “the melodic line is suavely crooned by the ‘lounge lizard’ quartet of saxophones, English horn, and bassoon.” I love that.

Next is Jose Luis Greco’s boisterous I’m Superman! (1994), with its Carl Stalling-like frenzied shifts, performed by the Orquesta Filarmonica de Gran Canaria.

Finally, one of my favorite “new music” pieces, Ezra Laderman’s 1962 Nonette for six winds, violin, cello and piano, recorded by the New York Philomusica in 1996 for this 2-cd set (which has 5 more tracks than listed at that page).
