This week’s mix. I’ve been especially loving that Tony Scott/Bill Evans LP and the experimental stuff from Jace Ewing. If only all unsolicited homemade CDs someone hands you for free were as interesting…

Heavy on the obscure British 70s stuff this week, mostly thanks to a pal, Dickie, who freed them into the wild from his amazing collection. There’s another Tempest song, “Stargazer,” that I forgot to include in the set list; it shows up between the Caravan and Steamhammer.

This week’s collection. Hope someone out there loves Steve Reich’s “Tehillim” half as much as I do, and that new Esperanza Spalding is just amazing. There’s a great review of the Selecter’s dark, joyful, angry 1980 debut here. Enjoy.

Another scattered selection. Hope you enjoy. For what it’s worth, that Simple Gifts CD of Shaker vocal pieces is wonderful stuff, and has me doing something I usually don’t like to do: read large sections of a book online. In this case it’s a sharp, informative history of the Shakers, The Shaker Experience in America: A History of the United Society of Believers, available at Google Books. The early chapters are so good I’m not even bothered by the occasional unavailable pages. I had no idea the Shakers were such punks. Lunatic fanatic punks, but still. (Oh, and reverse the song/artist names for the 2nd cut; the band is Frou Frou.)
