B.P.R.D. – 10/18/2009

A mix this week, starting with the first, dizzying movement from Poulenc’s 1932 Concerto for two Pianos and Orchestra. I’m starting to understand the “part monk, part guttersnipe” description. Then Krzysztof Penderecki’s famously harsh 1960 piece Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima for 52 Strings. Next is a chamber piece by Brook Joyce, “Six Degrees of Separation,” from the innova CD “Waves of Stone: Music by Brook Joyce,” which came out in 2000. Then a stylistic jump to a noise/collage/jazz piece by my new favorite group, the Canadian Ensemble SuperMusique, the title track to “Y’a du bruit dans ma cabane,” a fantastic CD from 2008. The show ends with another short piece from Brook Joyce, “toydogmusic” for piccolo and toy piano. Hope you enjoy.

B.P.R.D. – 10/12/2009

This week’s show pulls pieces from three Composers Recordings, Inc, CDs: The Tania León and Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson are from A La Par, a collection of works by African-American composers; the Wadada Leo Smith is from Marty Walker‘s collection of bass clarinet works For BC: The Redlands Sessions; and the Robert Maggio, David del Tredici and Conrad Cummings are from the surprisingly diverse and interesting first volume of the Gay American Composers collection, whose liner notes are, funnily enough, filled with thoughtful skepticism about the idea of “gay music.” Enjoy.
