We may not have achieved empirical springtime yet, but we are experiencing Passover and Easter, according to our inclinations, so some of the musical picks on this week’s Updoc—Friday at 8PM, noon next Tuesday, New York Cosmopolitan time—were easy: the opening choruses of Bach’s St. John and Matthew Passions, Paul Robeson singing Go Down, Moses, etc., but it wasn’t much of a stretch to come up with Eric Satie’s uncharacteristically searing Messe des Pauvres and a couple of Arnold Schoenberg’s powerful postwar works composed after his reconversion to Judaism: his kabbalistic setting of Kol Nidre—yes I know it’s a Yom Kippur piece, but so what—and his shattering A Survivor from Warsaw. Things lighten up after that with a popular Bach Cantata, the end of the B-Minor Mass, and a couple of other versions of Go Down, Moses, one of the most indelible American melodies. Great Hank Jones solo on it too. Familiars of the show may also enjoy a number of oopsradio.argh moments in which your commentator botches a detail or two. Bring your own liquid paper, and either leavened and unleavened bread to munch on, or possibly for the tip jar.

Here in Updoc’s neighborhood, a mostly non-eventful winter seems intent on pouncing lion-like upon the prospect of late March’s as yet unborn lamb. The light verges golden some days but the rain and snow keep telling us it’s neither Spring nor Passover nor Easter yet, and for some reason my music-ears have sought out the sounds of innocence or something like it; or maybe it’s only because I gave the gentle hymns and folk tunes of Dave Douglas’s album Be Still another listen, and so will you if you tune in to this week’s Updoc—Friday at 8PM and noon next Tuesday, Brooklyn Botanic Gardens time—which starts out with a suite of five Douglas tunes played by a finetuned band of his usual suspects and above all the deceptively simple voice of Aoife O’Donovan sailing the music straight at your heart. After that it’s a short step to Britten’s Ceremony of Carols, Lee Morgan getting hymnally earnest for once with his classic Search for the New Land, followed closely by Lisa Bielawa’s Double Violin Concerto, ineffably her own while deeply beholden to late-period Shostakovich, as played by Gil Rose’s great Boston Modern Orchestra Project, who also take up Paul Moravec’s virtuosic illumination Northern Lights Electric. After that it needs only the Golden Gate Quartet to urge Moses to go down there and liberate the people in their season. Botticelli’s coming over with some hippie girls, so bring the best of the spring wine if you drop in.

A jittery mix for jittery minds. Actually, this one felt a bit calmer than usual; lots of downtempo stuff to relax into. Hope you enjoy.
