Death Valley Radio Program 871

Death Valley Radio is a format-free program for the musically curious.

In this age of bland radio programming (both commercial and non-) and automated music services, DVR is still built by hand, non-algorithmically — one set at a time.

Death Valley Radio can be heard here at taintradio on Saturdays at 10:00 PM ET and Wednesdays at 10:00 AM ET.

We can really do sad songs. (No brag, just fact.) DVR program 871 features holiday melancholia from Nickel Creek, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Ray Charles, Brook Benton, Peter Rowan with Gillian Welch, Christopher Paul Stelling, Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell and Heidi Talbot.

Also: Rickie Lee Jones asks “How do we explain a time as crazy as ours?”; Kenneth Salters does some interesting things with Dolly Parton’s “Halos and Horns”; Chick Corea and Béla Fleck get extremely frisky; and longtime colleagues Wadada Leo Smith and John Lindberg finally record as a duo.

This week’s message, courtesy of Todd Snider: “If life is anything, it’s embarrassing. A rusty nail through a careless shoe.”

Each week’s playlist will be archived until the end of time at deathvalleyradio.org.
